Cultural presentation:

Topic: China’s Transition: From Imperial China to Modern China

    Introduction: This presentation discusses in-depth how China has transformed from Imperial times to modern era. Important events such as the establishment and collapse of the dynastic era, the formation of the Republic of China and the May 4^th Movement, the founding of China’s Communist Party, the Long March, Mao Tsetung’s regime and the Cultural Revolution, and the Post-Mao reform that have significantly altered the political, economic, and cultural fabric of the Chinese nation and course of history will all be covered.

Day 1: the Antique Cultural Market (Liulichang), Beijing Hutong, Tian’anmen

Square, the Forbidden City, Wangfujing Shopping Street，Dinner*

Day 2: the Great Wall (MutianYu or Badaling includes the Ming Tomb)

Day 3: the Summer Palace

Day 4: the Lama Temple and Confucian Temple

Day 5: the Temple of Heaven, the Pearl Market

Leave the Hassle and Bustle of city life and relax in Fujian. This tour is a perfect combination of sea resort relaxation and a learning experience of Hakka culture and the Chinese revolutionary history. On top of it, you will visit the picturesque Wuyi Mountain as well as the beautiful Guanyin Tea Plantation.

3.  Home Experience

---Chinese Spring Festival Experience with Lan’s family in West Fujian

Spring Festival Experience: Enjoy a First-Hand Experience of Chinese New Year, which includes visiting a local open air market to buy food; preparing New Year cuisine with local family; participating in firework festival; paying New Year Greetings to Locals and Relatives, etc. The total experience lasts 5-7 days!

Cost: 500 Yuan / per day, which includes home stay accommodation, meals and Lan’s language assistance and cultural explanations. You will be assisted with the transportation arrangement, but the cost will be on your own.

my second cultural tour --- a trip to the Fragrant Hills

May 11th, Tuesday, a beautiful sunny day in Beijing. I took Jack, Ebbe and Philips to visit the Fragrant Hills in northwest, Beijing. We had a wonderful time hiking up the mountain and chatting.

My first cultural tour  --- a trip to the Great Wall

March 16^th, 2010 was really an exciting day for me as I had my first cultural tour: to take Professor Scott Davison’s family of seven people to the Mutianyu Great Wall. I had been anticipating the day with keen eagerness and a slight nervousness as I was not sure how my first tour would turn out.

To guarantee a successful trip, I made a conscious effort to attend to details and these included laying out a well-thought itinerary, working out the estimation of the cost, securing a safe and comfortable vehicle, booking a decent restaurant. Although I had already acquired much knowledge of the Wall, I still spent many mornings memorizing the tour guide talk from a guide book so that I would be able to deliver my talk fluently.

It was a lovely day on the day of my tour with blue sky and bright sunshine. We left for the Great Wall at 9 am as scheduled. As it was my first time to meet Scott’s mother and sister, I started my talk with a very brief self-introduction and then proceeded to introduce the Great Wall. The Scott family is really easy going and we had a good time chatting and laughing on the way.

The ride to the Great Wall was smooth and uneventful and after about one hour and a half, we arrived at a restaurant near the Great Wall. It was a very nice restaurant with tropical trees and bushes growing inside. Having dined out with numerous foreigners before, I was very confident about ordering Chinese food that would please westerners. Scott gave me some good suggestions too. The food was very tasty and they were very pleased.

After lunch, we were ready for the hike on the wall. We went up by cable cars which saved us quite a lot of energy. Although I had been to the wall many times, it was still my first time to visit the wall when it was still covered in white. The wall wound its way on top of the mountains till as far as our eyes could see. Around it the world was clothed as if in thin white veil. What an amazing scene!

We hiked with easy pace on the wall for about half an hour, appreciating the beautiful scenery from our Mother Nature. Then we had much fun sliding down from the wall. What an experience!

It was really a great day for me and I couldn’t be more satisfied as they were very pleased with my service. Scott later sent me an email and said that they look forward to the possibility of being my second and third clients. This is really a great encourage for me and I’m actually very grateful to them for the opportunity they kindly offered me.

Dear MUC foreign teachers,

For years, I’ve been thinking about ways to expand my service that will also benefit my career development.

With the rapid economic development in China drawing more and more world’s attention and attracting more and more foreigners to see with their own eyes this dynamic and fascinating country, probably some of your family members, relatives, friends and acquaintances are also interested in making a trip to China. They might need help with their itineraries, the estimation of costs, accommodations, transportation and a good English-speaking guide that can show them around.

These are exactly what I can help with and am capable of doing. If the trips go beyond Beijing, they will be transferred to China Youth Travel Service(CYTS) or China International Travel Service (CITS). Both are the most well-known travel agencies in China with good prices and top service quality.

Apart from that, I will be happy to provide talks on Chinese history and culture, translation and interpretation services if requested.

As for the fees, at the moment my main interest is to accumulate experience in tourism. My service fee will be fair, reasonable and negotiable. If you go on trips with CYTS or CITS, I can ensure you better prices and better quality than you can find out on your own. My service fee will come from their usual profits by our agreements.

So I’d really appreciate it if you happen to know someone who might need help with their China trips and could introduce me to them. Trust me, they will spend less, but gain more.

Who am I

Who am I ?

I’m Lan Huiwen, a member of staff of Minzu University of China(MUC) in Beijing. Growing up Fujian province in South China, I studied for my bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature at the MUC and have been working in the MUC Office of International Relations since graduation. A large part of my job is to provide foreign delegations and groups visiting the MUC with interesting cultural experiences, which involves giving talks on Chinese culture, arranging trips and acting as a guide both in Beijing and beyond.
